Why do we password protect some parts of the website?

The main reason for the password protection is because our work and others at the MIT Media Lab are sponsored in most part by commercial businesses. Many of our sponsors have interests in commercializing the lab's research projects (such as the LEGO Mindstorms which was inspired by the research around the Cricket) and they hold the rights to the intellectual property we develop.
